FILMS ON STEINWAY: For The Bible Tells Me So
A Film by Daniel Karslake

Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.

Father Louis Braxton, the program director at Carmen's Place a shelter for LGBT youth will lead the discussion.

Astoria Residents Hold March Against Hate

On Sunday, September 7th at 1:00pm, several Astoria Civic Groups under the umbrella coalition, Astorians United Against Hate Crimes, will hold a March Against Hate in response to the July 7th assault on gay and transgender residents of Carmen's Place who were targeted because of their gender and sexual orientation, as well as Reverend Louis Braxton Jr., the priest who runs Carmen's Place, who was also attacked after his attempt to defend the youth.

The event will begin at 1pm with a rally, featuring speakers and musicians, at Athens Park, located at 30th Avenue and 30th Street in Astoria. At 2:30pm, the group will begin to march down 30th Avenue to Steinway Street, ending with a moment of silence in front of Carmen's Place, located at 31-14 Steinway Street.

Astorians United Against Hate Crimes is an ad hoc coalition that includes Generation Q of the Queens Community House, Astorians for Peace and Justice, the Long Island City Alliance, the National Lawyers Guild New York City Chapter, local Democratic Party members, members of Barack Obama's Astoria campaign team, and any other community members who wish to respond to the assault.

"I shouldn't have to feel afraid to walk down the street with my partner because of people who don't want to accept homosexuality," says Shanel Ford, a 17 year-old Astoria resident and member of Generation Q.

Join us as community members stand up in support of the diversity that makes Astoria special.

FILMS ON STEINWAY: In Debt We Trust  by Danny Schechter

From www.indebtwetrust.org:

IN DEBT WE TRUST is the latest film from Danny Schechter, "The News Dissector," director of the internationally distributed and award-winning WMD (Weapons of Mass Deception), an expose of the media's role in the Iraq War. The Emmy-winning former ABC News and CNN producer's new hard-hitting documentary investigates why so many Americans are being strangled by debt. It is a journalistic confrontation with what former Reagan advisor Kevin Phillips calls "Financialization"--the "powerful emergence of a debt-and-credit industrial complex."

AFPJ is pleased to announce that Danny Schechter will be joining us to talk about his film. Danny Schechter is a television producer and independent filmmaker who also writes and speaks about media issues. He is one of the founders of MediaChannel www.mediachannel.org, where he writes a popular daily blog about politics, culture, and the media.

FILMS ON STEINWAY: The Camden 28 by Anthony Giacchino

Come see this week's showing on Wednesday, June 27, 7:00pm at Generation Q. 30-74 Steinway Street, 2nd Floor (between 30th & 31st Ave) Astoria.

How far would you go to stop a war? The Camden 28 recalls a 1971 raid on a Camden, N.J., draft board office by "Catholic Left" activists protesting the Vietnam War and its effects on urban America. Arrested on site in a clearly planned sting, the protesters included four Catholic priests, a Lutheran minister, and 23 others. The Camden 28 reveals the story behind the arrests, a provocative tale of government intrigue and personal betrayal. Supreme Court Justice William Brennan called the ensuing legal battle "one of the great trials of the 20th century." Thirty-five years later, the participants take stock of the motives, fears, and costs of their activism and its relevance to America today.

The film is being shown courtesy of P.O.V., the awarding winning documentary film series broadcast on PBS.

VIPS now includes 61 former professionals from CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Department of State's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Army Intelligence, the FBI, the National Security Agency, and other US intelligence agencies, plus the intelligence agencies of three coalition allies.

Astorians Lobby Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. on Peace Tax Fund Bill

On June 9th, the State and Federal Legislation Committee of the New York City Council heard testimony in support of the Religious Freedom Peace Tax Fund resolution from representatives of 21 different churches, peace groups and other organizations. Resolution 367 supports legislation currently in Congress that would allow taxpayers to claim conscientious objector status and designate their federal tax payments to go into a fund to be used for non-military purposes only.

Speakers articulated a variety of different concerns and reasons for supporting the resolution, ranging from a belief in religious freedom to concerns about the impact of the military budget on the availability of funds for domestic needs. The testimony of each speaker is available at www.nyc.peacetaxfund.org. The full text of the resolution is here.

NYC is the first city to consider such a resolution. 51% of the current Federal budget (excluding Social Security and Medicare funds) goes toward current and past military expenditures (see www.nationalpriorities.org). The hearing was held at the same time that the City Council was engaged in budget negotiations for fiscal year 2006 and served to highlight the impact of military spending at the local community level.

Ian Hart and Mary Ann Lewis, members of Astorians for Peace and Justice, and Neena Das of the NYC Peace Tax Fund Campaign met with Councilman Peter Vallone prior to the hearing and urged him to support the resolution. The group engaged in a substantive discussion of matters raised by the legislation. Read a Q&A by the Peace Tax Fund Campaign that covers similar issues here.

While Councilman Vallone made clear that he did not support the concept of a Peace Tax Fund, we communicated that a substantial and organized number of his constituents are anti-war and concerned about the domestic impact of military expenditures.

Candidate Challenges Carolyn Maloney on War and Civil Liberties Record

On September 14, Registered Democrats in Astoria, and in the rest of Congressional District 14, which stretches from Manhattan's Lower East Side to East Harlem, Roosevelt Island, Astoria, and Long island City, will choose their candidate for Congress in the fall general election. Robert Jereski, who is running against incumbent Carolyn Maloney, says:

I am a Democrat who stands firmly in challenging the Bush Agenda. I am going to help clean the House by winning our District's seat from a 12 year incumbent who supported Bush's War and other aspects of his right-wing program. If elected, I will first and foremost listen to you, my constituents. I am dedicated to helping bring jobs and a healthy economic future to the communities of our District and working hard for peace in the Middle East and in Iraq.

Jereski's campaign is facing fierce opposition from Maloney, and is currently struggling regain a ballot slot after a five-person team of election lawyers and objectors from Maloney's campaign successfully challenged enough signatures on Jereski's ballot petition to have it fall short of the required number by four. One of the originally contested signatures is from a member of AFPJ. Why is the Maloney campaign trying so hard to keep Jereski off the ballot? Responding to this question at an August 3rd press conference, Jereski replied:

When we get on the ballot, Maloney will have to account for her support for the war which has cost our country so much in lives, money and prestige. She will have to explain how cherished domestic programs have been undermined by the huge expense of the war.

With the primary nearly one month away, will the Jereski campaign be able to educate voters about their choice at the polls in time? The campaign needs volunteers to get the word out and is looking for volunteers who can distribute literature, collect new emails of interested people, put up posters and flyers, and organize speaking opportunities at community venues.
